While English distinguishes between \u201cthis\u201d and \u201cthat\u201d for objects that are closer or farther away, French doesn\u2019t make that distinction:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Ces v\u00eatements sont trop chers.<\/em> \u2013 \u201cThese\/those clothes are too expensive.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Cet acteur m\u2019agace!<\/em> \u2013 \u201cThis\/that actor irritates me!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use <em>celui<\/em><em>celle<\/em><em>ceux<\/em> and <em>celles<\/em> to say \u201cthe one\u201d or \u201dthe ones\u201d. You can use French demonstrative pronouns in three situations:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>With the suffixes <em>-ci<\/em> and <em>-la<\/em>. When paired with <em>-ci<\/em>they mean \u201cthe one here\u201d or \u201cthe ones here\u201d \u2013 or, more naturally, \u201cthis one\u201d or \u201cthese ones\u201d. With <em>-la<\/em>they mean \u201cthat one\u201d or \u201cthose ones\u201d. If using <em>-ci<\/em> and <em>-la<\/em> in the same sentence, then <em>-ci<\/em> comes first:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Quel gar\u00e7on l&#39;a fait, <strong>celui-ci<\/strong> ou <strong>celui-l\u00e0<\/strong>?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWhich boy did it, this one or that one?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Tu veux <strong>celles-ci<\/strong>? Non, je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re <strong>celles-l\u00e0<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 \u201cDo you want these ones? No, I prefer these ones.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>To introduce a clause with a relative pronoun. (Remember the relative pronouns?)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Voici <strong>celle dont<\/strong> j\u2019ai r\u00eav\u00e9.<\/em> \u2013 \u201cHere is the one that I dreamt of.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Ce vin est <strong>celui que<\/strong> tu n\u2019aimes pas<\/em> \u2013 \u201cThis wine is the one you don\u2019t like.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Ceux qui<\/em><\/strong><em> sont polis recevront un cadeau.<\/em> \u2013 \u201cThose who are polite will receive a gift.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>With a prepositional phrase (usually one with <em>de<\/em>):<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>C\u2019est ta voiture? Non, c\u2019est <strong>celle de<\/strong> mes parents.* \u2013 \u201cIs this your car? No, it\u2019s my parents\u2019.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"indefinitefrenchdemonstrativepronouns\">Indefinite French Demonstrative Pronouns<\/h3>\n<p>The indefinite French demonstrative pronouns are <em>ce<\/em> (<em>c\u2019<\/em> before a vowel), <em>\u00e7a<\/em><em>ceci<\/em> and <em>cela<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>They refer to something abstract or unspecified, and, as such, they don\u2019t need to agree with anything. This means they don\u2019t have a number or gender.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ce<\/em>when used as an indefinite demonstrative, means \u201cthis\u201d or \u201cit\u201d. It\u2019s usually used with <em>\u00eatre<\/em> (\u201cto be\u201d):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>C\u2019est important<\/em> \u2013 \u201cIt\u2019s important.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>C\u2019est la vie!<\/em> \u2013 \u201cThat\u2019s life!\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Ce sont de bonnes nouvelles.<\/em> \u2013 \u201cIt\u2019s good news.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Ce<\/em> also works with <em>devoir<\/em> or <em>pouvoir<\/em>but only when those verbs are followed by <em>\u00eatre<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Ce doit \u00eatre une mauvaise id\u00e9e<\/em> \u2013 \u201cThis must be a bad idea.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Ce peut \u00eatre difficile de ne pas se f\u00e2cher<\/em> \u2013 \u201cIt can be difficult not to get angry.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Ce<\/em> can also work without a verb, but it sounds pretty formal and isn\u2019t very common:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Elle a travaill\u00e9 en Allemagne, et <strong>ce<\/strong> en tant que b\u00e9n\u00e9vole.<\/em> \u2013 \u201cShe worked in Germany, and this as a volunteer.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use <em>\u00e7a<\/em> with all other verbs. This includes <em>pouvoir<\/em> and <em>devoir<\/em> when they\u2019re not followed by <em>\u00eatre<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u00c7a va?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cHow are you?\u201d (literally: \u201cDoes that go?\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><em>\u00c7a peut nous aider.<\/em> \u2013 \u201cIt can help us\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00c7a<\/em> can also be used as the direct or indirect object of a verb:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Je trouve \u00e7a tr\u00e8s ennuyeux<\/em> \u2013 \u201cI find that very annoying.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Tu es d\u2019accord avec \u00e7a?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cDo you agree with that?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Ceci<\/em> and <em>cela<\/em> mean \u201cthis\u201d and \u201cthat\u201d respectively. They can be used as drop-in replacements for <em>\u00e7a<\/em>although they\u2019re more formal, and less common in everyday speech:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Je trouve <strong>ceci<\/strong> tr\u00e8s ennuyeux<\/em> \u2013 \u201cI find this very boring.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Tu es d\u2019accord avec <strong>cela<\/strong>?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cDo you agree with that?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"frenchinterrogativepronouns\">French Interrogative Pronouns<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Interrogative pronouns<\/strong> in French are pronouns which are used to ask a question. There are four interrogative pronouns: <em>qui<\/em><em>que<\/em><em>quoi<\/em>and <em>lequel<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>You may have noticed that <em>qui<\/em> and <em>que<\/em> are also relative pronouns, as we saw above. In that case, <em>qui<\/em> and <em>que<\/em> are used for the subject and object respectively of the relative clause.<\/p>\n<p>But when they\u2019re <em>interrogative<\/em> pronouns, the distinction is different.<\/p>\n<p>The rule now that <strong><em>qui<\/em> is used for people, while <em>que<\/em> is used for things<\/strong>. And both of them can be either the object or the subject of the sentence.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"theinterrogativepronounqui\">The Interrogative Pronoun <em>Qui<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em>Qui<\/em> means \u201cwho\u201d or \u201cwhom\u201d, and is used to ask a question about people.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Qui conduit?<\/em> (\u201cWho\u2019s driving?\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><em>Qui l\u2019a fait?<\/em> (\u201cWho did it?\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When <em>qui<\/em> is the object, you must invert the word order:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Qui aimes-tu?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWhom do you love?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Qui a-t-il vu?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWhom did he see?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alternatively, you can use <em>qui est-ce que<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Qui est-ce que tu aimes?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWho is it that you love?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Qui est-ce qu\u2019il a vu?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWho is it that he saw?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Qui<\/em> can be used with a preposition:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u00c0 qui est-ce qu\u2019elle parlait?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWho was she talking to?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>De qui est-ce qu\u2019elle parlait?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWho was she talking about?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"theinterrogativepronounsqueandquoi\">The Interrogative Pronouns <em>Que<\/em> and <em>Quoi<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The interrogative pronoun <em>que<\/em> means \u201cwhat\u201d. It\u2019s used to ask a question about things, not people.<\/p>\n<p>When <em>que<\/em> is the subject, use <em>qu\u2019est-ce qui<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Qu&#39;est-ce qui se passe?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWhat\u2019s happening?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can also use <em>que<\/em> with inverted word order and the addition of <em>il<\/em>but this is uncommon:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Que se passe-t-il?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWhat\u2019s happening?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When <em>que<\/em> is the object, you can either invert the word order, or use <em>qu\u2019est-ce que<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Qu\u2019est-ce que tu manges?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWhat are you eating?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Que manges-tu?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWhat are you eating?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Que<\/em> after a preposition becomes <em>quoi<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>De quoi est-ce que vous parlez?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d (Or: <em>De quoi parlez-vous?<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"lequelasaninterrogativepronoun\"><em>Lequel<\/em> As an Interrogative Pronoun<\/h3>\n<p>We already saw the four variants of <em>lequel<\/em> and how they can be used as relative pronouns. They also function as interrogative pronouns, in which case they mean \u201cwhich one?\u201d or \u201cwhich ones\u201d?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Je vais acheter les chaussures.<\/em> \u2013 \u201cI\u2019m going to buy the shoes.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>Lesquelles?<\/em> \u2013 \u201cWhich ones?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"resourcestolearnfrench\">Resources to Learn French<\/h2>\n<p>Whew!
